Simple Tips for Shoveling Snow This Winter

One of the main reasons for visiting a chiropractor this season is due to low back pain from shoveling snow. There are some simple tips to help prevent low back pain from shoveling snow. One simple thing to do is to make sure that you are well hydrated. Many parts of your body, like your blood and the discs in between your spine, need hydration in order to work optimally.

Another tip is to warm up your back even before going outside. Doing a “cobra pose” , which is a yoga pose, is a great way to prepare your spine for the rigors of shoveling. In shoveling, there may be excessive flexion of the spine. This pose warms your spine up for the stresses of that motion in the spine.

Also, be sure to bend at the hips and not from your back. That will protect your spine from being aggravated from the heavy loads of snow.

As in this video above, work smarter, not harder. Don’t shovel up large amounts of snow at once. Go from the top layer down and make it easier for yourself.

Consider these tips and be safe this winter!
